In Japan, summer means time for watermelon. However, we Japanese are not satisfied just enjoying watermelon in fruit. We actually transform Japanese sweets into watermelon!

Here’s Japanese confectionery shop Eitaro’s watermelon manjyu (steamed cake) which is sold every summer. The watermelon pattern on the surface is drawn with a brush by a Japanese confectioner! Not only the outside but the inside is also watermelon-like. Colored sweet white bean paste is used to describe the red juicy flesh, and black sesame for the seeds. Yam is used in the dough, making the manjyu nice and fluffy♡

It’s about the size of a tennis ball, so I cut it into pieces just like a real watermelon and shared it with my colleagues! If you’re planning to travel to Japan during summer sometime in the future, it’s definitely worth a try. (It doesn’t have a watermelon flavor but it’s one way to visually enjoy Japanese summer!)

Watermelon Manjyu: 1,620 yen each (incl. tax)
