Paintbrushes have a history of over 100 years as a local industry in the Jimokuji district of Ama City. In the 1960s the city was the largest producer of paintbrushes in Japan, and even today it produces more than half. The bristles used for brushes vary in strength and feel depending on the combination of bristles, so it is a chance for the craftsmen to show off which bristles to blend and in what combination. They are hand-crafted which means they can be made to order, and is known as a secret brand that supports the meticulous work of famous lacquer and sushi chefs and other skilled craftsmen.
