At the beginning of the Meiji era, Fumikichi Ominato, the first generation of the company used Japanese paper (washi) which was a product of Kamo and coated the paper with a substance extracted from persimmon tannin to make Shibu-gami (insect repellent sheets to be placed under tatami mats). This is how the company started as a manufacturer and wholesaler. The Honzou Byobu folding screens are the artworks made of natural materials such as wood and Japanese paper and created with the skills of skilled craftsmen. Ominato Bunkichi Shoten aims to revive and spread the art of byobu folding screens which has been cultivated for over 100 years in modern living spaces as excellent interior products for daily use.
