The Shirakawa Daruma was born as a lucky charm from the idea of Sadanobu Matsudaira, famous for the reform of Kansei to "make the lives of citizens more energetic". Since ancient times, when people have wished for something, such as family health, company prosperity, graduating high school or passing university entrance test, or winning an election, Shirakawa Daruma has always been by their side and has always supported people's dreams and hopes. The biggest feature of Shirakawa Daruma is that "Tsurukame Shochikuume" (crane, tortoise, pine, bamboo and ume), which are symbol of good luck, are depicted in the face, and it is said that the design was done by the famous painter, Buncho Tani. Also, when making a wish, it is customary to put on the left eye of the Daruma doll first, and when it is fulfilled, put on the right eye.
