- Japan Shopping Festival in Tohoku
A fascinating region, there are many ways to enjoy the four seasons in the Tohoku area; festivals in the summer, the changing colors of the autumn leaves, as well as the natural beauty that can only be enjoyed in the snowy regions. However, winter offers more than just the beauty of nature. Here, we will introduce several special experiences that can only be enjoyed in the winter in the Tohoku area, like strawberry picking and snow play, as well as foods that represent each local area, such as beef tongue.
We look forward to your visit to the enchanting Tohoku area.
[Aomori Prefecture]
Aomori Prefecture, which is located on the northern most point of the Japanese Home Islands, is known for its heavy snowfall. Due to it being surrounded by sea on three sides, in the North, East, and West, seafood is also abundant. Oma especially is famous for its tuna caught using the single hook fishing method. There are also the World Heritage Jomon Prehistoric Sites that are scattered about.
[Akita Prefecture]
Akita Prefecture, one of Japan's leading regions for rice production. It is also famous for its Japanese sake made from sublime water and rice, and many sake breweries are located there. Other well-know winter traditions include building "Kamakura" out of snow, as well as "Namahage", which takes place throughout the Oga Peninsula on New Year's Eve.
[Iwate Prefecture]
Selected as the runner-up in the New York Times "52 Places to Go in 2023," Morioka is the capital city of Iwate Prefecture. The coastal regions harbor a thriving fishing industry, where you can easily get your hands on fresh seafood, as well as enjoy breathtaking views of the intricate ria coastline.
[Miyagi Prefecture]
Roughly 400 years ago, the military general Date Masamune laid the foundations of what would become Miyagi Prefecture, and there are many historical sites that convey the glittering culture of a past age. Development has progressed from the city of Sendai, the center of the Tohoku region, providing easy access to other prefectures. There are also many places to stop by for local delicacies and shopping opportunities.
[Yamagata Prefecture]
Yamagata Prefecture, with the great Mogami River running through it. The Edo period saw the expansion of transportation via boat, and Kyoto's culture was carried through the waterways from West Japan. The prefecture has a flourishing fruit production industry, including their famous cherries, and there are also many restaurants offering the thick and wild "Japanese Soba."
[Fukushima Prefecture]
A region blessed with natural beauty. Mt. Bandai, the symbol of Fukushima and known for it's beautiful shape, and the 4th biggest lake in Japan, Lake Inawashiro, are both located here. Many historical sites still remain, such as castles and shukuba-machi (traditional inn towns), and in the spring there are countless spots to observe the blooming flowers. It is an area reminiscent of the original landscape of Japan.
