Tips for enjoying shopping in peace in Japan

Tip 1 I want to shop from the morning!

Large stores such as Japanese department stores generally open around 10:00 a.m. to 11:00a.m. " I want to shop before breakfast! " We cannot fulfill that feeling much.
Most stores are also open on weekends and holidays. However, many shops are closed during the New Year's Day on January 1st. Also, in local cities, there are cases where local products are sold in the morning market (brand products are not sold), but some stores such as convenience stores are open 24 hours a day.

Tips 2 I want to communicate with clerks!

When you enter the store, clerks say to you "Irasshaimase." It means "Welcome, please come in" so let's enjoy shopping. If you have any questions, please ask the clerk. Recently, the number of clerks who can speak English and Chinese has increased. Even if they speak only little, they will treat you with great hospitality. When it is absolutely necessary, it is good to use a smartphone etc.

Tips 3 Whether the size fits

When trying clothing or cosmetics, please let the clerk knows. Please note that it will take a lot of time later if you return a product purchased through tax exemption procedures.

Tips 4 Is price negotiation necessary?

In Japan, the price will not be reduced by negotiating from the amount displayed on the price tag. Price discounts may be available at some consumer electronics retailers and flea markets.

Tips 5 There are things that can not be sold…

Color contact lenses which are popular among women, cannot be sold without a doctor's prescription. Please note that some drugs cannot be purchased without a pharmacist at drug stores.

Tips 6 Can they deliver it to your home?

Safe, secure and fun Japan Shopping! There may be many people who have so many souvenirs. Many stores have also expanded the service of sending luggage from the store where you bought the product to your home overseas, hotel, or airport. However, not all stores have delivery services yet, so please check at the store. Japan will continue to promote “empty-handed sightseeing”, so please look forward to it.

Tips 7 Gift wrapping is also available

Gift wrapping is also available at department stores, fashion stores, gift shops, and more. If you want to send souvenirs with gift wraps, please tell the clerks. They will wrap it nicely with gift packaging, shop wrapping paper, and ribbons. In some cases, you may be charged a fee such as a box fee.
