In recent years, Sabae City in Fukui is famous for glasses. However, this region has been originally a Mecca of lacquerware which is collectively called “Echizen Lacquerware”. Its history goes back to the Yamato/Asuka era. The anecdote that Emperor Keitai admired a shining lacquer black bowl and greatly promoted the lacquerware has been passed down to the present. The lacquerware has been loved and its technique has been succeeded for roughly 1,500 years.

Using carefully selected lacquer from all over Japan

The feature of Echizen Lacquerware is the quality of lacquer which surprised even the emperor 1,500 years ago. People who are craftworkers of Echizen lacquerware and members of a lacquer expert group called “Echizen-shu” traveled all over the nation to collect lacquer. Vessels using such lacquer greatly shine and fit in your hand.
As characterized by the high quality of lacquer, Echizen lacquerware has relatively modest decorations (painting) in general. Presently, vessels with modern color paintings have been produced as shown above.
