“Yuruchara” is a contraction of “yurui character” and “yurui” means something like benevolent and not concerned with minor details. So, many yuruchara are warm, fuzzy, and cute, making us unconditionally feel light at heart. Their main purpose is the publicity of municipal governments and they are used in ideas and plans involving the local history and products for public relations activities. Some such yuruchara are greatly active with this intention and become national characters loved by both children and adults.
