Many visitors come annually to Japan just to see the flowers, especially the famous sakura trees, blooming during the spring season.

The sakura (cherry blossoms) in Japan are probably the most popular flowers and lots of people from abroad book a flight just to see the many shades of pink announcing the beginning of spring in Japan.

However, many don’t know there are many other flowers you can see in spring that offer a splendid landscape painted in rainbow colors. Also, the flowers marking the beginning of the spring are plum blossoms, not sakura!

Below, I will introduce you to the many other types of flowers that bloom during spring and where and when you can enjoy seeing them.

Plum Blossoms (Ume Blossoms)

From Late February to Early March, the plum blossoms let us know that spring is coming and many places in Japan have ume festivals where you can go, prepare a bento(lunch) box and admire the delicate and fragrant flowers.

The blooming ume trees can be seen in many areas around Japan and some of my recommendations are:

1. Yushima Tenjin

This is one of my favorite places to enjoy hanami (flower viewing) because of its serene atmosphere that calms me down every time I go. During the ume season, there is traditional music and many performances you can enjoy and the view of plum blossoms and shrine all together make a perfect picture.

2. Atami Baien Plum Garden

Atami Baien Plum Garden has many things to offer and a few of those are footbaths, the nice fragrance of the flowers and an idyllic view given by the beautiful ume trees in spring. You can also take part in many events and have a taste of the local cuisine while there.
