Kumanofude brushes are manufactured in Kumano-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima. Kumano’s brush making has been passed down to posterity since Edo era. Currently, Kumano-cho has 1,500 brush making craftsmen who are called “Fudeshi.” Among them are 20 artisans with more than 12 years of experience in making brushes with excellent finesse and practice; they are acknowledged as “traditional craftsmen,” maestros of brush making. Brushes carefully made by these traditional craftsmen with integrity have been highly regarded as top-quality brushes.

By mixing a variety of hair, a handy brush is created

Animal hair used as a raw material for brushes (including goat, horse, weasel, deer, and raccoon) is mainly imported from China and North America. The stiffness and flexibility varies by hair, so craftsmen pick and mix a variety of hair to make a handy brush by making use of merits each animal hair has.
