Whenever you travel anywhere food is always a top priority, including those little snacks we need when on the go or taking a break from sightseeing. Everyone needs their snacking needs met and Japan offers a wide variety of pocket-friendly snacks that are both delicious and unique so you can satisfy your snack craving whilst still experiencing something new! Here’s a look at the best snacks that Japan has to offer, most of which can be found pretty much anywhere in Japan!
Pocky
This is the ultimate and by far best snack that Japan has, I mean it’s so good that there’s even such a thing as “Pocky Day” (on 11/11 each year, as the 1’s are supposed to represent the stick shape of the snack)! Pocky are thin biscuit sticks that are nearly all the way covered in chocolate… who wouldn’t love that! Pocky are very inexpensive, with one pack coming with two sachets full of sticks, and though this sounds like a lot (and it is a lot) the snack is incredibly moreish so you probably won’t even notice you’ve eaten all the sticks until there’s no more left! Pocky also doesn’t only come in chocolate flavour, but in many other varieties, such as “Brazilian orange” “strawberry shortcake” “azuki” and “matcha”. As a side note, there is also a Pocky factory in Saitama with free tours available (wait list for reservations is very long however).
KitKat
The second of the snacks to buy are KitKat, and if you don’t know what KitKat are then I’m pretty certain you’ve been living under a rock! KitKat are pretty much popular worldwide and Japan is no exception. KitKat in Japan are often given as a “good luck” gift and so there are plenty of KitKat around.
