Is this saying true that “the more smelly, the more tasty”?
“Kusaya” from one of Tokyo’s islands, Ni-zima is said to be the smelliest kind in Japan. Is it stinkier than `natto`? …Hey, natto is not even considered stinky! But for sake lovers, kusaya is a great side dish and very tasty! What the heck is kusaya…?
Kusaya is made first by putting fishes like horse mackerels into fermentation liquid, and then dried in the sun.It is usually grilled before eating it.The event grounds is filled with some unique smell. How do I explain this…It is something aromatic, unbearable smell… can’t put this in words…Kusaya indeed is the World 5th and No. 1 in Japan for its smell!
We asked a group of girls and boys from Taiwan to taste kusaya…
Oh dear… the pretty face got instantly clouded…
This guy was like “I can eat” and munched on it!
Are you all right? You are looking far… aren’t you trying too hard?
And this guy was…
“It was very delicious!”
Wait what! You finished it?!!
Well… we hope you kind of got a sense about attractiveness of kusaya. You can try kusaya at islands of Tokyo, such as in Niijma and Shikinejima.
Give it a try if you are courageous enough! There definitely is waiting some kind of deliciousness over the stinky-ness.
There are also vacuum-packed kusaya for souvenirs!
