The Chugoku Region is divided by mountains into two parts: the warm and urbanized Sanyo Region in the south, and the snowy and much more rural Sanin Region in the north.
The Sanyo Region attracts more attention in terms of sightseeing than the other with Hiroshima and Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area the two major spots while the Sanin Region is rich in natural beauty and history.

Across the Seto Inland Sea from Chugoku is the Shikoku Region, where udon, a type of thick wheat flour noodle, is a popular cuisine. Also, citrus fruits and olives are produced in abundance thanks to its warm climate throughout a year.
