Japan is the world’s top country regarding the number of aquariums per population. Whereas there are various aquariums having huge aquariums, state-of-the-art facilities, and so on, "Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium" has a high profile with innovative exhibitions, that is "the largest number of jellyfish display types in the world". There are full of jellyfish, such as, photogenic gigantic aquariums displaying only jellyfish, approximately 60 kinds of jellyfish exhibits, jellyfish gourmet such as jellyfish ice cream and ramen, and jellyfish souvenirs such as stuffed toys and sweets! You can thoroughly enjoy the jellyfish world.

For "Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium" built on the coast approximately a 30 minute ride by bus from JR Tsuruoka station, the number of visitors drastically once declined momentarily, which lead to facing the crisis of its closure, however, since exhibits of jellyfish that are difficult to keep and manage has been developed full-scale from 1999, the number of visitors gradually increased. In 2005, it exceeded "Monterey Bay Aquarium" in the U.S.A. regarding the number of jellyfish display types and was certified as the Guinness world record in 2012. In 2014 the building was also renewed and many visitors from all over the country visit.
Among them are the "Kuranetarium" which displays approximately 60 kinds of valuable jellyfish in various countries as well as in Japan. It is a valuable exhibition that you can see various jellyfish at once which has different figures, colors and ways to swim.
The highlight of the exhibition is a circular, 5-meter-diameter tank "Kurage Dream Theater". Approximately 2,000 aurelia undulate in the tank and you will be so attracted to their relaxing and elegant appearance as they are so fantastic.

You must also check out "Jellyfish Culture Center" where you can enjoy learning fascinating ecology of jellyfish. You can observe the process of growth by looking at a small baby jellyfish with a few millimeters through the magnifier. You can see jellyfish eating phytoplankton, and actually touch jellyfish at "Commentary on feeding jellyfish" performed 4 times a day.


Show time where sea lions play an active part vigorously

In addition to the jellyfish display, there are lots of fun. During the period from late March to November, "Sea lion show" is held every day in a pool with a view of the sky overhead. Their appearances of performing a variety of techniques, such as jumping through a hoop and catching a Frisbee, are with plenty of charm. As one or two people can participate in the event held at the end of the show, such as throwing rings with sea lions, you should try and challenge.
