▲kyara-ben (Japanese character lunch box)
Have you ever heard of the word “Bento”? It is a traditional “lunch box”, which originates in Japan. In Japan, bento box is an essential part of Japanese culture. This is kyara-ben (Japanese character lunch box). Nowadays, kyara-ben is a kind of Bento art, which has recently become a trend in Japan. To make their children happy, Japanese mums spend time making characters out of food, such as Totoro and Hello Kitty, in their children’s lunchboxes.
If you want to take a kyara-ben class during your visit to Japan, Washocook is the best choice!!
Last week I joined their cooking class. This was a 2.5 hours class in a small group of eight. We learned how to prepare kyara-ben using rice, fresh vegetables, eggs, etc. Our teacher, Tomoko, who is very lovely and spoke great English, showed us how to make kyara-ben in a simple and clear way. She was happy to answer any questions about Japan. It was a nice experience to study with her.

Making kyara-ben is a really good experience and well worth doing during a trip to Japan. Why not have a try?!
For more details and information on how to book the class, please check their homepage:
By the way, if you want to make kyara-ben when getting back to your home, buying some cooking utensils at the supermarket is also a nice idea.
