Shibuya’s popular “goodwill alleyway”, Hobo Shinjuku Norengai, has unveiled an annex venue that converts a large warehouse (that neighbours the main site) into a yoko-cho area filled with a number of shops that bring energetic vibes to the area.
The venue is set at the border of Shinjuku and Yoyogi, in an area that was once the beating heart of Tokyo until it was forgotten by time.
Despite Docomo Tower dominating the sky above, this area was in dire need of reform and renovation. That’s why Hobo Shinjuku Norengai was developed back in 2017 as a way to revitalise the area without losing the rich individuality that exists there.
A few years have passed since the opening of the main venue, but now the area is getting an extension that can hopefully help breathe life back into the neighbourhood.
Although a pre-opening party was held for the annex back in January of this year, the quasi-state of emergency imposed by the government forced the postponement of the official public opening. However, now that the state of emergency has been lifted, the venue is finally open and ready to welcome customers.
Hobo Shinjuku Norengai Project
Hobo Shinjuku Norengai is a project operated by Tokyo restaurant group Spice Works, which aims to revitalise the restaurant industry through the regeneration and repurposing of run-down buildings and venues.
The main venue, and the annex that now joins it, consists of a collection of unique stores that retain a showa-era charm. In addition to good food, visitors to the venue can expect to be entertained by a variety of nostalgic performances such as caricatures, magic shows, juggling and so much more.
