Bia Hoi Chop

Slightly west of Shinjuku on the JR Chuo Line, Nakano is a midsize center that’s currently on the rise. Known for youth culture, it’s a great place to explore without having to deal with the mania of Tokyo’s larger centers.

On the periphery of the dense tangle of restaurants and bars near the station’s North Exit is Bia Hoi Chop, a cheerful Vietnamese eatery with some of the best pho (noodle soup) and atmosphere around. There are off-menu items, including a soy-milk base pho, as well as sandwiches, though these sometimes run out. Enjoy a Vietnamese beer while lounging on a cushion atop the brand-new elevated seating area.
