Yame Tea sees its 600th birthday this year.
It is said to have originated in 1423 (Muromachi period), when Zen master Eirin Shuzui returned from the Ming dynasty (which is now China), bringing back tea seeds to a place whose current address is Kasahara, Kurogi-machi, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and imparted the cultivation and manufacturing methods to Matsuo Tarogoro Hisaie, a then village headman. In commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the birth of Yame Tea, the product 『Yukyu Ippuku』 is available, which is a tea produced in cooperation with Mr. Shozaburo Matsuo, the 34th head of the Matsuo family as a descendant of Matsuo Tarogoro Hisaie, and with the help of employees of Iwataya Mitsukoshi in planting seedlings, caring for the tea garden and harvesting the tea.
