If you’re traveling in Japan searching for the best in local cuisines, you simply cannot miss Hokkaido. Its vast land is surrounded by oceans, and becomes covered in white from the snow in winter and is moderately hot in the summer. These land features and climate contribute to the many local specialties of Hokkaido. Also, the development of a unique food culture owes largely to the merging of food culture brought by people moving into Hokkaido from various regions throughout Japan from the frontier period about 150 years ago. There are countless local specialties in Hokkaido, but this time we’d like to introduce some of the most famous and distinctive specialties.
The milk, butter, cheese and soft-serve ice cream produced in this region, boasting the most number of dairy cows in Japan, are rich in sweetness.
-Yubari King melon
Characterized by a mellow aroma and soft, orange flesh, the Yubari King melon’s taste is one that you can never forget.
The two potato brands, “Danshaku Imo” (Irish Cobbler potato) and May Queen, are extremely popular in Japan. We recommend steaming the potatoes and topping it with butter.
The crab’s meat itself is delicious, but combine it with the ample innards filling the mouth with sweetness, and it’s a delight.
Eating it raw as sashimi or grilling it is delicious too, but the salmon hotpot called “Ishikari Nabe” is a well-known Hokkaido specialty. It’s made in an earthen pot with broth from konbu kelp, and chopped salmon simmered together with vegetables.
This is a mutton barbecue dish named after Genghis Khan. Mutton is grilled on a specialized pan that also cooks the vegetables with the juice from the meat at the same time. You’ll fall in love with its special aroma that stimulates your appetite.
The few dishes mentioned above are only a mere part of the list. There are also sushi-go-rounds that use fresh seafood, ramen noodles with flavors unique to Hokkaido and lots more in specialties. Why not plan a tour of Hokkaido to enjoy some of these local gourmet specialties?
